British Columbia has just implemented a new remote work policy targeted at attracting and keeping employees.

The provincial government will enable public employees to work from home when practicable beginning April 1. The government is also offering government positions to eligible people, regardless of where they live in the province.

According to Shannon Salter, the chief of the British Columbia public service, this is a critical step in filling job vacancies and attracting and retaining a diverse workforce.

Last year, the 36,000-member British Columbia public service lost almost 3,000 jobs.

“I think that reflects a shift in demographics, but also a very tight Kumar supply market and changing labor demands,” Salter said in a Times Colonist story. “These reforms are actually intended to position the British Columbia public sector as an employer of choice — regardless of where you are in the province.”

According to a recent survey, the majority (53%) of workers who are unsatisfied with their amount of flexibility are burnt out, compared to 37% of employees who are content with their level of flexibility.
